Which side of the engine does the slot go on? My Dtykes manual says the primary thrust side which would be the right hand side of the engine looking towards the rear from the radiator end.

Away from the camshaft.
Is there a reason why the wrist pin bolts are on the camshaft side.Is that so we do it all in the same way.
Follow the rotation of the rod when fitted backwards and see what the pin is putting pressure on, 'the bolt' fitted the right way and in any stage of the rotation it is always on the rod. Many early british rods are clamped the same way and stipulate that very reason. Fit the right way to avoid the possibility of stretching the clamp bolt.
