I just ordered a T-3161 distributor. What would be a good coil to use with it. I didn't want to order their $60 kit?

Or you can get a Napa 6 volt coil part# IC7

or if you need 12 volt, part# IC64

These coils do not need a resistor, but I got to say, unless you already have the spark plug wires, your not saving a whole lot. I did the math myself, and just purchased the kit.
