I just finished pulling my 1918 engine apart, and what a job it was! Every bolt in that thing fought me almost to a standstill but with a lot of sweat (and a little oxyacetylene) the bare block is sitting on sawhorses.
The main purpose was to determine just how bad...or good...its condition was. It will need to be bored, valve guides reamed, etc. etc. but my main concern was the crank and bearings. A cursory look at the main bearings in the block is promising. Smooth and very serviceable. The caps have a couple of tiny bits of babbitt missing near where the caps join the block. I had to look close to see them. The major portion of the cap babbitt looks quite good. There were still shims under the mains also.
Is is possible to purchase only rebabbitted main bearing caps? I have a lot of measuring/checking to do yet, but I may be able to refit new caps rather than a complete rebabbitting job.
Gene French advertises rebabbited caps on the classifieds page. We have made them here also.
Thank you Erik......I'll know which way to go in a couple of days after some measuring. Either you or Gene may be getting an email.
