If that picture goes with the story, its not a Model T. Sorry for the loss of life

It looks like it may have been a nice '30/'31 model A Ford. My sincere condolences to the family and friends regardless.

Definitely a Model A. Sad to hear of the loss of life. Gotta wonder how it happened.

Here's another article that tells a little more:
http://abc7.com/news/2-killed-after-antique-car-crashes-into-tree-bursts-into-fl ames/964783/

"Witnesses said the classic car, which is believed to be a Model A Ford, suddenly veered off the road and slammed into the tree, bursting into flames.

Authorities do not know if there was a malfunction with the car or if the male driver suffered some sort of medical crisis. Neighbors said the couple was in their 80s and they loved to cruise around town in their vintage car."

When we were having our HCCA Gazette meetings in Temple City, I used to go through that intersections often. Too bad.

Hold on .....In their 80's, still doing what they loved, .... so sad ?

I only HOPE to get croaked doing what I love when I am in my 80's !

Some times, I think our society has a very warped way of looking at
death. Would it be better if they died slowly in bed of some terrible
cancer type disease ?

Celebrate a long life well lived ! :-)

Burger,

Sorry, I do NOT want to go doing what I love to do. I wanna keep doing it! I'll be happy to go when I can't do what I love anymore.

I heard the news on KNX and they too said it was a Model T. I agree that it is a Model A. I agree with Burger.

Yes, we listen to KNX every night though it's not always real clear. San Diego (ESPN) usually comes in better. Both are a long way from Sacramento.

Does the Model A have left hand thread on the right side spindle like the Model T?? Did they probably have the wrong spindle on the right front?

I'v done that once and wound up in the ditch. Glad I was going slow....You definitely are going to go into an uncontrolled turn if a front bearing locks up.

Hal: No. It looks to be '31 55-B (tudor sedan), and well maintained. Likely a medical condition at fault. Impact would have ruptured the fuel supply line, and the radiator support rods could have been driven through the fuel tank. Terrible tragedy.

Model A outer wheel bearings are not threaded. Several people I know carry one model A wheel bearing as a spare because it will work on either side for a short while. A few people I have spoken to run them in both sides of their Ts. That is a bad idea because the unthreaded bearing sitting on the threaded spindle tends to spin occasionally and eventually will wear the threads down and become loose and dangerous. Because the model A spindles are designed for unthreaded bearings, they do tend to spin some. But their solid base on the spindle does not wear nearly as much or as fast as the model T threaded surface does.
Chevrolet, and many other cars also have used unthreaded outer bearings for many, many, years. Spindle failures from that practice are rare. Using an unthreaded bearing on a model T threaded spindle is very likely to fail given enough miles driven. I have seen at least two cars come close.

Yep 30/31 model A
Wheel bearings are not threaded like on a model T but they still can fail for lack of care
Sorry well wishes for the families involved

Good gosh how fast were they going to warp up the frame like that?

That's one reason that I like the Freeways.

I know many of you think different but ours here in SoCal are Not like the Turnpikes or Interstates.

With all the recent T accidents we've heard about here I've been trying to remember if any on them happened on a freeway?

Remember an accident can happen anytime and anyplace.
