Hi, I am trying to remove the spring perches from my front axle with no luck. Any suggestions?
I was able to remove mine by using a large phillips screwdrever just small enough to go through the shackle hole in the perch and a combination of hammering and using the screwdriver as a lever got it loose. I wouldn't recommend using excessive heat on the axle. You don't want to weaken it.
I removed mine with a propane torch. I warmed the axle and then squirted liquid wrench in the small gap. Did it several days and then they came out fine.
I had one that someone had really beat on then gave up. I drilled down into the center of the stud then progressively enlarged the hole until 1/2 inch, but not all the way through. It then was easy to put a large drift in the hole and it knocked right out.
I removed the axle and used a 20 ton press. As careful as I was the heads still mushroomed. But they came out.
