Hi all,
Well – I don’t know the answer …. May I use one of my lifelines and call a friend?
I received an e-mail asking for information about what type of dust shield (also called grease seal – Model T part T-2841) is used on a 1928-31 Model A Ford front hub that has been turned down to remove the brake drum and will be mounted on a Model T front axle? I had a friend in Ft Walton Beach Florida who did that conversion back in 1980 or so on his 1926-27 Pickup truck so he could use the 1928-1929 Model A wire wheels.
I know he had some type of seal/dust shield as the front wheels were not throwing grease and he drove it a lot. The wheels were light yellow and the grease would have quickly shown on the inside of them. Does anyone know of a replacement dust shield / grease seal that will work when mounting the Model A front hub on the Model T spindles? (the question came from my comment about doing that at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/29/25493.html
I don’t know if my friend used a standard Model T dust shield. Or if he measured the inside diameter, outside diameters and thickness he needed and ordered a special dust shield from a bearing supply house (I’ve done that for some other applications and they have a very wide variety available – but they are a little pricey compared to one you can order from a standard automotive supply house or T vender.) I also do not know if he had to modify the Model A hub so the dust shield would fit properly or if he had to make any modification to the dust shield.
My guess – and it is only a guess – I bet he tried the Model T dust shield (part # T-2841) and if that worked – he used it. It also turns out the Model A Ford had two different front hubs – one cast iron and one pressed steel. On the Model A they used a baffle rather than a dust shield. That baffle was different for the cast iron than the pressed steel hub. And the baffle was bolted to the backing plate and Model A spindle with the backing plate bolts – so the baffle would not work on the Model T spindle without some addition modifications.
Does anyone have a good recommendation?
