When I bolt the crankcase to the block, I can not bolt the driveshaft bell to the end of the crankcase without prying the transmission shaft down about 1\8" It has new babbit and was line bored. Would the crankcas be bent down?? It looks good visualy, and is a 4 dip pan. Does anyone have a fix for a problem like this?? George.

It is extremely important to have the crankshaft perfectly aligned from the front to the rear. Stand the motor vertically, supporting it on the cylinder block (not the crankcase) and see it the rear bearing lines up. If it doesn't the engine pan is out of line. If the alignment is off by a very small amount, sometimes you can loosen the crankcase bolts and shift it until it lines up and then tighten the bolts. There is always some "sag" due to the weight of the transmission when the engine is horizontal.

George,
You don't say what year the engine and crankcase is. If it is a 26 or 27 it has two bolts which bolt the transmission cover to the back of the engine. If you tighten these bolts it will raise the back of the crankcase and transmission cover. Remove these bolts and then set the engine on end as Bruce says above and fit the bearing. After you get the bearing centered, make shims to hold the two ears at the top of the transmission cover out from the block by the distance at which the bearing fits and reinstall the two bolts

If you have an earlier engine and you take the crankcase off and straighten it on a jig, and it still won't fit your line bore might not have been straight. Hope that's not the problem
Norm
