I believe it's a frame from the 1928 film "Speedy"

Steve, Broadway is to the extreme left of the picture..... The building on the left, light stone, is actually the New York Times tower building. The view is looking up north on 7th Ave. from 41st St. Broadway crosses at 42nd. . The building straight on with the mansard top is the Hotel Astor, demolished in the late 60's, was between 44th & 45th St. on Broadway. Anyone know when the moving information banner was installed on the Times Tower ?

Happy New Year!

It's a great photo, but much earlier than 1928. For one thing, all the cars are earlier than that. For another, the Rialto Theatre - New York's first purpose-built cinema - there on the middle left with "Welcome" banners on it for its grand opening, which was 2 April, 1916. So the pic is from from sometime around then.

Cheers,

Rick Benjamin
