So the word came down from Henry's office that the new car was to be painted black. The Paint Department had a concern, what did He mean Black? This is the darkest colour possible. How do you sell something that is not colourful?
The head of the Paint Department made a bold move, he sent to "He Who Must Be Obeyed" some suggestions - the department head offered his list of Shades of Black colours that differ only slightly from pure black. This included dates the colour was named:
a. Midnight blue (1915), b. Ebony (1590), c. Taupe (early 19th century), d. Davy's gray (19th century (precise date uncertain)), e. Charcoal (1606), f. Jet (1450), g. Charleston green (originated after the American Civil War).
Henry was not happy with the suggestion. The head of the painted department was sacked. No $5.00 a day for him.
Henry's order went down through Design, paint the new generation of cars Black -- as Black as possible.
