Have them issue you a "Bill of Sale", even if they gave you the truck, just put an acceptable figure on it, get it inspected by your state's DMV inspector-here in Ohio we can either take it right to the license bureau and they'll do it, or to a local car dealer that has an authorized inspector. Then take that form to your title agency and hopefully Indiana will be as easy as it is here. Unfortunately I've heard rumors it isn't, but worth a try. Good luck.

Not sure of value . I paid $2000 with bill of sale .
BMV said that if it is not worth $5000 or more the judge won't even look at paperwork
I'll check with a local dealer
The previous owner done search in Florida and it was never registered there

Ooookay...sounds like some some of the Indiana rumors are surfacing here... :-(
In Ohio, we pay sales tax based on declared value. Maybe even if that's the case where you are, it'll be worth "upping" it to the $5k just in order to get your title done expeditiously.

Good luck.

Dallas if you have a bill of sale get a bonded title.
If you live in Indiana do an online search and find a bonded title service that deals with antique, classic and etc. type of cars.

They have all the answers you need and can make the process a lot smoother with no headaches.

A lot of DMV folks will give you a puzzled look and wont know exactly what needs to be done for antique cars.

A bonded title service will stop the headaches and problems that can happen if you go about it the wrong way.

Give Vermont a try through the mail. Check out this YouTube video, and many others available. It's very difficult here in MO, next to impossible. A 'Bill of Sale' isn't worth the paper it's written on. I used 'Broadway Title Company' 12 years ago. Was only a couple of hundred bucks then, now they're upwards of a grand or so. No problems getting title though, worked like a charm! They did hit me with a much higher value than what I paid, they want their tax revenue!

Too bad you're not in ohio. I titled 5 out of 6 cars via a bill of sale & inspection and never took more than 2 hours total time. One of, if not the only thing, that ohio does right!

Dallas,
Yes, this forum has the best, most helpful people here--BUT when it comes to getting titles & registration, everyone wants to jump in and help--I.E, "Here in Jefferson, all you need is XYZ and a handful of money or a fifth of Jack Daniel's"
I would ignore any advice except those who have dealt with your state's DMV as each state is a bit different--and here in California, each office is a bit different--even each clerk is different!
It can be quite frustrating at times. I have finally given in and used a title paperwork service that in this area is about a $250 cost; but well worth it IN THIS STATE--your state may be entirely different. Best to ask other old car owners who live near you; they can even tell you which offices to avoid! I know in my county the Highway Patrol has a verifying officer who thinks he is GOD himself; has caused more illegitimate problems for hobbyists than you can count! I once had to go to court to testify to save a guy from having his model A confiscated and the judge was a bit peeved at the officer and told him, "You are wasting the Court's time!" But he's still there, causing headaches. Your local fellow hobbyists will know who & what to avoid.
GOOD LUCK!!

Posting photos is easy Dallas. At the bottom of each message page is an upload button. Type your text, drop your cursor down to a new line and then click the upload button and a small window pops up which lets you choose your photo. Dunno if the limits have changed but I think you're limited to a filesize of about 190Kb (maybe a bit more).

Good luck with your Title.

Regards,
Garnet

Dallas...assuming you're using the typical computers with Windows XX, once you choose the picture you're wanting to post, do a "right click" on it, then a menu should pop up, one of the choices will be "edit"...click that and go from there. Pretty self explanatory once you see things pop up. Or, Google "resizing pictures on a Windows PC" and you'll find all sorts of tutorials. Hope this helps.

Go down to the DMV or whoever handles title applications in your state and see if you can find a sympathetic clerk. If you don't find them helpful, try a different office or another day at the same office. Getting the right person to help you is the best way to get something moving forward.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By David Dewey, N. California on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 - 10:27 pm:

Um. Ted's posting assumes you can find a "friendly clerk" at the local DMV office. NOT the normal or usual finding around here! DO talk to other old car folks around you to find out what seems to work best in your area. You aren't trying to do anything illegal, your are just trying to get your car registered. In most cases the less you tell the DMV, the better off you are. The attitude around these parts is usually, "What are you trying to pull--you must be doing something illegal!" Or it's "Oh Boy, are we gonna sock you for this one!"
Remember, they're from the Government and they are here to 'help' you!
Please listen to the voice of experience--I've been doing this stuff since 1973; stared out with a lien sale to get title on a '39 Chevy that had been "off the books" and in a back yard for decades--NO paperwork whatsoever. Yes, it was easier back then! Still took some 3 weeks though.
Your State WILL vary from my experience!

Indiana is not that easy any more. You need to fill out a packet of forms available at http://www.in.gov/bmv/2957.htm.

Then, you'll need a court order (yes, a court order from a judge) to certify that it is legally your vehicle.

You'll also need to pay sales tax on the amount that the vehicle was sold, listed on the bill of sale.

Don't bother going to a BMV branch. They'll send you to the web site. Friendly or not, they can't do anything for you.

Recent title fraud issues with stolen dealer vehicles and counterfeit title drove the BMV to requiring all the red tape.

Sorry to tell you this, but I thought I'd give you advance warning. A buddy of mine tried to get a title for an old Honda Trail 90 and he had to go through all this. Court costs and fees were more than the bike was worth!

OUCH! Maybe it's easier to get a title in Florida? It might be worth giving the seller some extra $$ to get a clear title. That is IF Indiana accepts a title from Florida! That might save you some pain--anyone here from Florida who can offer some advice?
