Was this cut out a hinged door from the factory or was there even a cover at all over the battery? My curiosity is getting the better of me.

No hinge. The door was just a wooden lid that fit into the recess in the floor. It had a hole in it so you could stick your finger in it to remove the door. Hinges would have cost an extra penny which was a big no no.

There is a lip on the left and right side only of the hole in the floor. I can take a photo if you need it.
