I was going through a set of magnets for a rebuild and found one was broken. They appear to be brittle or hard steel, does any one know what kind of steel they are made of?
The Ford magnets are made of Tungsten steel, heat treated and quenched in water to make very hard steel to hold magnetism longer. The hardness makes them a bit brittle. They don't bend, but crack.
Magnet steel formula is approx.
Each Ford magneto magnet will hold 5-6 lbs weight.
Now if you ever run across a set of Super Magnets, those can hold over 12 lbs each!
Thanks for the information, that is what I was wondering about.
Wow! $9.00 was a good chunk of change back then. Over $200.00 in 1915 according to the inflation calculator.
Set of 16 Ford magnets in 1913 Ford price list are $8 (.50 each). So that that much more at $12.
The 1924 Ford Price List has set of magnets at $4!
12 lbs? Wow, that must've made for one hell of a strong magneto!
