I have reason to believe that this may be a picture of the guy who sold the car to the previous owner from whom I purchased it. If that's correct, his name is J. Allan Saunders from the Darien, CT area.

Anyone familiar with the name? Recognize him from a tour or Hershey? Tried to do a search for his name here but nothing comes up. He would have owned the car 45 or 50 years ago.

Could be a total shot in the dark, but there is a woman by the name of Holly Saunders Hawes in Connecticut. I found the 1940 census that lists J Allan E Saunders as being 13 years old. That would put him at age 89 today. She looks like she might be his daughter or granddaughter.

Link with contact info here:

Maybe send an email to introduce yourself and see if she is family.

Hi Michael -

I got in touch with Holly. See doesn't recognize the man in the picture but she was going to ask Uncle Jack. She didn't mention the car at all in her brief Email. It may have been before her time.

There was a J. Allan Saunders who graduated from the Darien high school in 1945, born in 1927. He now lives in Anchorage, AK.

Thanks for the lead Roger. I called information in Anchorage but no listing for J. Allan E. Saunders. Should this be the guy, he probably has an unlisted phone number or only a cell. But like I said, no real match up on the name.

- in 1956, this car participated in a March of Dimes coast to coast tour (attached is a picture of the medallion once affixed to the dashboard) from New England through Texas to Los Angles.

- I was told (I have yet to see the movie) that the car was a prop in "The Cardinal" Starring Tom Tryon shot in Cambridge, CT and Boston in the early 60s.

It occurred to me that the owner before last may have a story or two about these or weather the engine was ever replaced. Stuff like that.

By the way, the first photo is a picture of the car back in the day when it was all cherried out.

Did you follow and read the links?
The mylife link may suggest Mr Saunders passed on in 2003? I don't know if whitepages keeps on listing people who has already passed, but if that's the case you may get a lead from their suggestion that he kn(e)w Barbara Jean Roberts and Cyndi L Saunders, Cyndi is listed as 61 years old and may be a relative?

>>>Did you follow and read the links?<<<

I did but I'm not a member of mylife so I can't go very deep. In fact, I've never even joined Facebook. This forum is about as transparent as I care to get. One link I clicked made it appear that they were downloading a criminal and bankruptcy history I thought 1) they're about to ask me for money and 2) I'm not real comfortable with this. All of a sudden I get the feeling I'm in someone's house looking through their drawers and all I really want is a phone number or Email address.

So having said that, I'll see if Barbara Roberts or Cyndi Saunders are listed in Anchorage.

Thanks for the tip.

Can't you still call, by dialing on a telephone, "information" and ask for a phone listing?

Information??? Do they still have information?

You must be thinking of a time when they had dozens of women with headsets on sitting in front of a big board plugging in phone lines and asking in a twangy voice

Number Please?

Apparently, directory assistance still exists! :-)

In December 1949, we moved from one St. Louis suburb (University City) to another (Warson Woods). After the move, we were in Kirkwood as far as telephone service was concerned and Kirkwood did not yet have dial phones. I can remember picking up the handset and waiting for the operator to say, "Number, please." Then we would tell her the number we wanted to call and she would put the call through. This thread has reminded me that we also had the option of saying, "Information, please." Then we were connected to Directory Assistance. I think we got dial phones in 1952 or 1953.

As I posted on Facebook a few days ago, I also remembered not long ago that calling the long-distance operator to place a call prompted the question, "Person-to-person or station-to-station?"

Jesse,

I did a search of the “Vintage Ford” and “Model T Times.” I did not find any reference to him in the “Model T Times.” But below is what I found in the “Vintage Ford” search.

He was listed as the Point of Contact for the Fairfield County Chapter MTFCA in the “Vintage Ford” from the Jan – Feb 1967 Vol 2, No 1 issue through Sep – Oct 1975 issue. They all had about the following:

FAIRFIELD COUNTY CHAPTER
c/o Allan Saunders
P.O. Box 892
Darien, Connecticut

In the Mar-Apr 1967 issue they had the note that he was elected president of the club in 1967 (name spelled with an “e” this time but same location so a type-o).

Then in the Nov – Dec 1975 “Vintage Ford” the FAIRFIELD COUNTY CHAPTER
name disappeared from the Chapter Listing page. A new chapter name appeared “Connecticut Cranking’ Yank’s Chapter.” The new point of contact was listed as Don Liepelt and his address was about an hour and 10 minutes away from Allan Sauders address.

CONNECTICUT
CONNECTICUT CRANKIN’ YANK’S CHAPTER

In the same Nov-Dec 1975 issue under “Chapter Happenings” they had:

Don is no longer listed as the Point of Contact for the Crankin’ Yanks. And he is no longer listed on the MTFCA web site as the Point of Contact for the Tent Topped Touring T’s. But he is still listed in the “Vintage Ford” MTFCA Chapters as the POC for the Tent Topped Tourings. His address is the same as listed back in Nov-Dec 1975.

I would recommend you try to get in touch with him and ask him if he might have any leads about the car or Allan Saunders or other former members of the FAIRFIELD COUNTY CHAPTER.

Good luck with your search.

Respectfully submitted,
