A good friend has a TT equipped as a tow truck. He was asking about his choices to make it drive a bit faster. I suggested the high speed rear axle gear set.

I've seen TT's with high speed rear end gears, an auxiliary transmission (Warford, Muncie, Jumbo Giant, etc.) mounted behind the planetary and another auxiliary transmission with overdrive mounted on the drive shaft just forward of the rear end. With an engine that runs tip top the darn thing would exceed 70 MPH.

Your friend should decide how fast he wants to go then develop a plan to get there. I'd also suggest he consider just how fast he wants to go on 90+ year old wood spokes, not to mention suspension and steering worries. Last but not least would be brakes. Speeding up a TT would be foolish without a set of auxiliary brakes.

Les, As far as I know Mike Hartman is the only person making the high speed gear sets. The ad Steve showed above is from when he first started making them. I believe the current price is 1850.00 for the set. But the gears are not his normal business. They are a "labor of love" type of thing he makes when he can. I just sold a set of his gears, that I got in a bunch of T parts. I also had the pleasure of talking to him at our local swap meet a few months ago about the gears I had, and about how he makes them. He said he is currently "out of stock" and has several people wanting them. So I see him maybe doing another run of them sometime, (possibly in the near future ???). But after hearing about what it takes to make a set, I no longer think he is overpriced. Just the cutting of the ring gear teeth is a 21 hour run time on the gear cutting machine. He also casts the brass ring himself. That alone is a major task to get the proper hardness to the brass. I would suggest to your friend, to contact Mike Hartman and get on the list if he is interested in a set. Mike drives his old TT truck (with a set of his gears), to our swap meet in Arkansas, and I hear it will keep up with, and also pass some of the regular T cars on the tours.

With all your ingenuity you might be able to adapt a 28/29 AA high speed set or rear axle assembly to the TT. They are the same ratio and there is a lot of commonality but I don't know about interchangeability.

I thank you for the flattery, but I am definitely not looking for a project like that. A little research I can fit in. In a couple of weeks I will post some pictures of progress on my aluminum 5 main T engine!!

I put a set of those in my TT and really like them. Thought they were made very well. Used ones also show up and I have bought two set's, but sold them rather than use em, they were so worn out. But I have seen one or two set's in good condition for cheap, you just have to be there when they show up. I have the high speed gears and an overdrive and my TT is twice as fast as it was - but it is still slow :-) I can cruise from 20 - 35 mph :-)

I have the high speed gears and no other auxiliary transmissions. Motor is stock. It is still slow! I would say that I would have a very hard time to keep up with any tour of stock Model T cars. If you plan on using it to tour, you will need more overdrive. Remember these trucks were built to replace a team of horses!

Colin, I hear you. I also have a TT with high speed gears and no other auxiliary transmission. The speed is ok for a TT, but no way can it keep up with a decent running T car, like on a tour.

Our Club, the Dairyland Tin Lizzies had a TT only one day tour this year with 6 TT's on it, and it was great!!!

I understand that one of the clubs in Minnesota also has a TT only day, and they even have a just for fun drag race. Maybe Derek Kiefer can tell us more about that....

I had a TT once with just high speed gears. Top speed was about 27 mph and on tours I would fall behind on the flat roads. But I seemed to catch the cars on the hills.
My gears came from an axle I found in the woods.

Robert, that's exactly where I found mine also, in the woods. The gears were just like new.
