What controls the camshaft end-play, and how much is permissible ? Engine assembled, timing gear off, I can move the camshaft back and forth about .040".

Front bearing and end play should be about .004" is it a stock cam or ground? one choice of removing the play is a thrust kit sold by the vendors that is placed between the gear and cover.
Early ground cams need this kit.

A good fix I've seen is valve spring shims for OHV heads
