Model T Ford Forum: Forum (old): Confused, Band Nut & Washer Placement

I put the bands back in a couple of weeks ago in mild weather and finally had a chance to start the car last weekend and adjust the bands. As I put the wrench on the band nut I thought, sugar, I got it wrong. My mind pictures the little groove in the nut fitting in the band ear to keep it from loosening. So I figured that the washer should have gone at the end of the spring on the other side of the ear instead of just inside the nut on the outside of the ear. Just to be sure I looked at a picture and it appears that the washer is on the outside next to the nut?

So where does the washer go on the reverse and brake bands, right next to the nut on the outside? If so, there was a bump on the washer if I recall, does that face the nut or the band ear? I swear I can picture the nut right up against the band ear and the washer on the inside. AM I NUTS or what!! By the by, Sonny is a 1916 touring with the bands that have removable ears so you can change the bands without removing the hogshead (sure).

Thanks,

Bruce

The bump on the washer faces outward to match the depression in the nut.
