I have a 1926 Fordor with a spare that is not complete. I am not sure what kind of locking device I am missing on this rim. I will try to post a picture. Also does anyone have the part I need to sell?
Sorry for the HUGE picture. This is the first time I have posted a picture. At least you can see what I am asking about.
Wally
Wally, There were different locking devises on these wheels, pictured below are two types. You are just missing the nut and bolt on your rim, I have fixed over a dozen rims just like yours. Get a good quality nut and bolt to fit the hole and with the tire off lock the rim together, snug the nut and bolt together with the nut on the inside of the rim where the tube fits. Now carefully weld a bead around the outer edge of the nut so it is fastened to the rim. Finally use a grinder and round off the nut with the bolt installed to as smooth as possible and leave just enough of the nut to grab the bolt threads. You want what is left of the bolt and nut inside the rim to be as low of a profile as possible so it does not cut the tube. I also use rim flaps and have had no problems....Michael
PS.-The original set up did not have a nut welded on the inside of the rim, this is just a fix I have seen over the years done to repair rusted out split rims. In the original set up there were just threads in the rim metal for the bolt to thread into, if you look at the picture you posted you can see what still remains of the original threads on your rim. I suppose you could possibly rethread the rim but the metal looks quite rusted....Michael
Wally: Michael is correct all the way through. Be sure to put a flap in the tire. They save a lot of headaches.
just reading you comments and had a question of my own. i just bought new tires tubes and flaps (30 x 3 1/2). do you assemble the tire, tube and flap and then put it on the rim? my rims had a rubber band tight around the rim, like a bicycle, do i use that as well as the new flap?
Thanks
john
John, Yes it has been my experience that the easiest way to mount the 21" set up is to gently stuff the tube into the tire, inflate to 3-4 pounds, then insert the flap around the inner diameter of the tube with a "cupped" hand. Then the tire, tube and flap is mounted on the rim as one unit...Michael
P.S.-I use the rubber band looking pieces only on my Model A.
My understanding is that the "rubber band" flaps were only used on the 26-27 wire rims.
