I found this rack for sale online and am am struggling to figure out what it does. I am looking for one that folds down and stows on the running board instead of one that slides back like an accordion as most of them do. Has anyone seen one like this?

It appears to clamp to the running board, then has adjustable-length ends that clamp to the front and rear fenders. It wouldn't fold down - you'd just remove it when not needed. It would only fit one or two body styles, because of the length between fenders. My guess (just a guess) is that it's for a shorter car than a Touring. Perhaps the seller can give you some dimensions.

interesting thought. I had not considered that. It does do something in the way of folding but maybe its just for storage?

Do the 2 end attachments somehow clamp on to the sides or lip of the fenders while the 2 on the bottom clamp to the running boards?

Do they swing up to form end caps on the rack? Then the thumb screws on the ends may pivot and fasten to the top edge of the rack to hold them in place?

Looks like two large clamp screws go under and two small ones clamp on edge of runningboard.

Linus - I don't think it folds, "just for storage". When used in the opened manner, which would of course allow for more or larger item(s) to be carried on running board, the height of the open rack would interfere with opening of car door or door(s). So, folding the rack to closed position when not in use would then allow full use of door or door(s). FWIW,.....harold

Unfortunately I neglected to take a picture, but Keith Gumbinger has a similar rack on his running board. It does fold down, but I don't believe it has the extra pieces on the ends.

I have a "fold-flat" carrier on our Centerdoor - pretty handy !

As Steve said, we have a similar rack that folds flat. It's very nice and we like it. It's much better than the accordian type. We're traveling now and I don't have a picture with me.

I can say that ours is not that rare as we've seen several just like it on cars and at swap meets.

Keith
