When I turn on the headlights the amperage needle does not move to the left. When the motor is running, it moves to the right due to the generator charging. The many years I have had the car the needle always moved to the left when the lights were turned on. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
Are your ammeter wires hooked up wrong ??? Reversed ??
You have the lights wired to the wrong side of the ammeter. One side of your ammeter should have only a single solid yellow heavy wire connected to it. That wire should go to terminal #3 on the firewall barrier strip. Terminal #3 is the third one from the left as you face the barrier strip. There is then a second solid yellow wire that goes from that same terminal number 3 and connects to the battery side of the starter foot switch. Nothing else should be hooked onto any of those terminals. I suspect the short jumper wire (heavy Yellow/black) is connected to the same side of the ammeter as your solid yellow wire and that is wrong. It should be connected on the side of the ammeter that has the YEL/BLACK wire already there. If not there then check at the ignition switch since at some point you have joined the solid YELLOW wire to the YELLOW/BLACK wire side of the ammeter and that is incorrect. NO solid yellow wire should be electrically connected to a YELLOW/BLACK wire.
Check it out.
