It may reduce cooling somewhat, but if you over heat because of plate placement your car problem is bigger than deciding where to put the plate.
When I'm looking to buy a T and I see a water pump I assume there are real cooling system problems. Kind of like when you see a handful of fuses in a modern car's ash tray it doesn't scream "buy me"!
