It looks like a double coil box and an odd taillight.

Nobody in the car looks happy.
I'm assuming that's a master vibrator mounted on the coil box? I agree Tim...all sour-pusses. Seems typical for the times. Plus like others have said, may have something to do with the long time exposures that some of the old films needed. Think how exciting it would be in that car with no top and a pop up storm hit! No wonder they don't smile!! ha ha.
I think they're all sad while watching their "traded in horse" being led away.
