I will hopefully be taking delivery of the speedster very shortly. In light of that, I have begun planning to go through the remaining driveline components that haven't been rebuilt yet. The only two pieces I know of that need to be done are the rear axle and the cast iron Warford.
I have been told that the rear axle overhaul is a bear to do. What is the typical cost in parts for this? Is it something a guy with good mechanical knowledge can handle?
Regarding the Warford, should I just disassemble and clean everything and then reassemble? It was in a running car, but I would like to make sure it is still in good condition. What oil is recommended for it?
I can't comment on the Warford, but IMO you can handle the rear axle. If the Hyatt bearing sleeves are still in place in the housings, you will have to buy, borrow, or make a sleeve puller. Also, make a holding fixture from a piece of 2x10 and clamp it to a workbench. An electric orbital sander is handy for adjusting the thickness of the new bronze thrust washers.
For some reason, once again, the title has automatically changed itself. This was supposed to be titled "Rear axle and warford"
That's OK, I enjoyed the new title!
