I'm getting ready to change the engine in my '25 Coupe and was wondering if I had to raise the front of the body (cowl) to let the engine and mounts clear. Also, can I install the hogs head, pedals and starter before installing the engine or does this have to be done after the engine is in place?? I've installed several engines in chassis before but never with the body mounted and bolted down. Thanks :Bruce

I've installed a 1915 and a 1923 engine with the pedals in place, but in both cases I had to set the front of the body up on 2 x 4 blocks to get the pan ears back past the firewall.

Bruce,

I have a 23 coupe. You can take it out as one unit, but get a friend. You will nearly have to stand the entire unit on its end to get the pedals to clear the fire wall by TIPPING the crank to the sky. Put an eye bolt in the 3rd piston and lift from there. It will help move your center of gravity back as far as possible. I was able to pull it forward far enough for my ears to clear and then started tilting.

I agree with Scott, I just did an install with buddies and had to tip the whole thing up to clear the wall, then leveraged it to squeeze the firewall tabs up a bit and slid engine in. We ended up just shoving it through and breaking out a bit of the wood firewall tabs. No big deal though.

I have a 24 Coupe and removed the firewall and steering column when I installed the rebuilt engine in it. I have 2 other cars and have done it both ways but doing it with the firewall removed makes it super easy when the body is on it and your by yourself.

To each his own on removing an engine and replacing it.

My wife and I pulled and re installed the engine in my 26 Roadster without moving the body . Used the technique described by Scott Batta.

It helps to get a "load leveler" (Harbor Freight has a cheapo for $23) which allows you to tip the engine as needed. It also helps to loosen the bands so you can wire the pedals forward. However, for removing the engine for overhaul, it is easy to pull the hogs head first as it will have to come off anyway. I like to have everything all together before installation so I tip it then. Some firewalls (homemade?)must be removed as they do not allow clearance for the rear motor mounts. Also, remember to drain the oil or make a cap for the back of the transmission to keep the oil in.
