We are restoring a 1927 Ford Model T Truck. We have some doubts about fitting the outside Oil Line on the Ford Truck. This line connects the transmission cover housing to the timing gear cover.

Is it possible for you to provide us with a picture to show how this is connected on a car? I will appreciate your help.

We are from India. Please reply to our Email : csa@teamcsa.in

Howdy C.S. Use the Google search engine to search this site. If you type [outside oil line mtfca], without the brackets, into the google search engine and hit enter you will find what your looking for and then some. Good Luck my friend!

C.S.

The typical outside oil line uses special magneto terminal with threaded fitting, and a special long hollow bolt placed in the lower edge of the timing cover, replacing the bolt there.

Before you waist your money on one, take a wrench and remove the nut on some one elses car down by the timing cover and see how much oil they really do not get down there! I lost ten bucks on a sucker bet once and I was the sucker! I was on a tour in my earlier days and I was bragging one of them up, some old boy told me they were not worth the time and effort, so the bet was on, I wrenched it off expecting to see oil run out, then revved it up, now there was a drip every so often not what I was expecting! Then he showed me his that came off of the side of the hogshead that some Dr. come up with years ago and that one works well! Texas T sells them and the other Vendors. Just my thoughts on waisting money!

Joe

FWIW, I think the success or lack of same is related directly to the magneto pick-up and how it is made. I have a magneto pick-up oiler that goes down the right side of the engine and deposits oil into the oil filler hole, via a short stand pipe that is drilled through the side for the oil pipe...the oil cap fits on that.

I can remove the oil cap while running and that darn thing moves some oil! In fact when I bought the car, I had to take up the rods and when I changed bands to get rid of rotten cotton bands, I found the oil funnel completely blocked. The previous owner and me, for 6 months, got away with the only oil being supplied was supplied by the outside oiler...I think that speaks well for this particular one.

But like you, I've seen my share of nearly or completely worthless outside lines, too.

I recently installed one of these:
http://bobsantiqueautoparts.com/product/t-3081-ol2-outside-oil-line-kit-1926-27/

And while I had been warned on the forum that it may not do anything, the order was already shipped so I installed it anyways. I see now that mine came with an elbow for the top end when a straight fitting would have been better but for now I went with the elbow. I was careful to make sure none of the fittings would impede the flow of oil, there's a chance the one at the mag post can stick a few threads into the cavity inside or even worse, can ground the magneto.

Anyways, with the fittings one I first jammed some clear tubing in place of the copper line to see if anything really did go through. With cold oil, it flowed in the tube at about 3-4 inches per second. I imagine it would move a little faster warm but not be a geyser by any means. Still, it did more than nothing and that was good enough for me.
