I am in the process of changing the later (better) wishbone for one that is period correct for my '18. I have the makings of a brace which uses the 'legs' of a later wishbone. I also have installed the early perches, which took some finding!

My concern is that the early perches don't have enough thread underneath to attach the later wishbone and still utilize the split pins. Also, on one of the perches, there is some deterioration to the bottom of the thread. Without the brace, there wouldn't be any issue. With the modern wishbone legs, there is.

I have heard of nyloc nuts being tapered (making them conical) and used, but I am still uneasy about the lack of thread on those early perches.

Using the wishbone without the brace would solve the problem but I don't feel that safe without a brace.

Can someone who has made up a brace advise me on what they have done?

Ford made replacement spring perches with provisions for the early wishbone that have enough threads to use the late wishbone. You need to either find some of those or use a thinner nut.

Fred Huston told me to use drive shaft nuts and it worked great. You can still cotter them.

Nevin, I would use thinner nuts as was suggested. With the extra brace, there won't be as much strain on the nuts, IMHO. Dave

Hey Jack, That's exactly what I was wanting to hear. This forum is great! Thanks everyone. I'm off to ferret around in the boneyard tomorrow and find some driveshaft nuts.
