I understand that the gas tanks (round, '15) were galvanized. I couldn't find any info on it in Bruce's online encyclopedia or the one on CD, but that's what has been said here before. What about the tanks' mounting straps? Were they galvanized, bare steel, or painted?

I have an MTFCI Judging Guidelines manual somewhere but am unable to find it so far. Is this kind of info in there?

The straps on at least one of my round tanks were also Galvanized.

Thanks, guys. I have one strap that's galvanized and one that's bare steel. I painted them both today with "cast iron" colored paint that looks close enough to the color of galvanizing to suit me.

Does anyone here show your cars and are you familiar with the MTFCI judging guidelines? (Still haven't found my book.) That seems like a good place for this kind of information.

Mike,

Rustolium makes a spray called "galvanolium" it is a cold galvanize paint in a spray can.

I wish I had known about that this morning. :-(

Most of the '15's I have seen in shows (including an AACA Senior car) had the straps painted black. Mine were galvanized, but were starting to rust, so I blacked them.

Plain steel on my '17.

I used some galvanizing paint (Cold Galv I think) on the TT over three years ago and was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't look exactly like galvanizing, but looks better than silver paint. It has stayed on very well, even where gas gets spilled on it at times. Dave

Thanks, Guys, for your input.

I found it! The "Judging Guidelines" book, that is. I bought it at Richmond last year and put it away with some other stuff. There is a wealth of information there about various details, much like Bruce's big book. The galvanized gas tank is mentioned, but nothing about the straps' finish. I also learned a bunch about many of those "peculiar" 1915 parts. Looks like I'd better get my checkbook oiled up if I'm to do this car correctly. :-)

This has me asking what was the proper finish for the 26-27 cowl tanks?

My '27 touring had what appeared to be a galvanized tank. Was that correct for the open cars? Closed cars same...or painted? Black?

I have found a super clean tank to replace the orginal (rust inside) this one is painted black (not well done) and I would like to strip it and paint with the "galvanolium" if that will be more correct.
Any body out there with an original "27 touring or roadster?
Thanks.
