This is a pic of the bands when I opened it the other day...The 1st thing I seen was the slow speed band and how the band was coming out...... but from what I've been reading we put an extra little hump in there when replacing the bands.... so is it ok?

It takes off good but sometimes it takes a few sec to take off and the peddle is to the floor..

Thanks for the help

Eric, The hump being refered to is when you replace the linings you start from the ends and work toward the middle compressing the excess as you go. That way you don't end up with material strecthed tight between the rivits. You should'nt have that much excess at the end, the other bands look about right. Keith B

the extra material is on the low band and is coming off or out of the band in the direction that the transmission turns. Your description of the car waiting a bit to go after the pedal is to the floor tells me that the drum is slipping and only slowly being gripped. This slipping will damage the band and if they had been kevlar, would possibly be overheating the drum. Looks to me like you have cotton or scandanavia bands and the extra material is frayed or loose material. Also on the brake drum (rear drum) I don't see any evidence of band material sticking past the metal band portion. Drum looks OK, but may soon have metal to metal contact. Since there is more than normal band sticking out on the other side, possibly band material was put on too far to one end. Have a knowledgeable person look at the situation soon.

Maybe it's just the angle of the photo but it appears to me that someone started on the left side and just riveted the lining to the band in a sequential order until the ended up at the right side with extra lining. Doing so would cause problems with lining wear which would show up earliest on the LOW and then the BRAKE linings which seems to be exactly what's happening.

I'd yank all three and check 'em out.

Eric,
It is not OK.
Time to reline the bands, lots of older threads discussing how and different lining material options.

Time to pull the bands.

From this angle on the other pic you cant see the reverse...they are really thick and tough which makes me think there kevlar but it doesn't matter I'm going to take them out and go with wood I think

Ever since I got the car and when I had to hit the brakes it makes a errr.....errrr...errr...sound when I push and let up....I'm just going to change them out....

thanks guys!!

Eric,
Read my post on the "big bang" The band looked like that in the first picture. Since your car is still running, you might avoid a similar problem if you pull out the bands and check for cracks in the low drum. If it does not have cracks, you can reline the bands. If it does have cracks, it's time to rebuild the transmission.
