Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2009: How much to offer?

I looked at a pile of rusty A & T parts yesterday. It's all pretty rusty and no way to be sure of it's ability to be used. Most of it was said to be "Next to a building that burned." but supposedly not IN the building. Here is a list of the stuff I saw:

26-27 chassis with cowl, fuel tank, steering column, front axle, rear axle, and some sheet metal that used to be fenders.

2ea. 26-27 engines and transmissions. One assembled. Don't know if it is stuck. The other is disassembled and the block has a big chunk missing from one upper rear corner, so it is scrap iron. Flywheel had no magnets on it. I did not see them in the box of parts that held the pistons and manifolds and such.

There was pallet that had maybe 6 30-31 Model A wheels and another rear end which had been disassembled, and what looked like a rear spring.

The guy said he had advertised it for $500, but only had one person to look at it and declined to buy it. He was thinking about scrapping it and told me to make him an offer. I figure it's probably worth less than $200 in scrap. You'd have to do a lot of cleaning and disassembly to know how much of it is salvagable, so I don't want to go too far out on a limb. I was thinking of offering $200-$250 and see what he says. What do you guys think?

I don't know what I will do with it. Speedster comes to mind. Being a 26-27 frame, will I run into any problems if I want to put an older engine or body on it?

Anything under $300, and it is probably worth your trouble. Could be worth a lot more, but who knows?

Hal, I think you are right on the money price wise.

Rootlieb speedster bodies do not work on 26-27 frames. Earlier engines will work just fine in the later frames.

The engines have low compression - even if the hand crank is gone, you can grab the pulley and turn it to find out if it's stuck.

Thanks, guys. I'm gonna go look at the stuff once more and make him an offer. As for the engine being stuck, it was under a shelf with tons of stuff in front of it. There was no way to get to it to turn it. I was able to get to within about 6 feet of it. It's gonna be fun trying to get all of this stuff. The engines were indoors. The rest was outside in some pretty tall grass with tons of junk all around. Looked like a good place to get snake bit! Might take a shotgun along just in case. Been near or above 80 the last few days, I doubt they're gone into hiding for the winter just yet.

Funny. By contrast, my wife flew to Minneapolis today. She said it was cold and snow on the ground.
