My bendix has is cracked in the part the catalogs call a "drive sleeve". Two problems: 1)how do I remove it from the rest of the bendix, and 2)the one in the catalogs looks like it attaches differently.
Not sure if the differences are because this one is Canadian.

John, Finish it off by opening the crack on the old part. The broken piece will come off and there's an undercut groove on the Bendix.

The repair sleeve installs by punching the two slit areas into the previously mentioned groove.

From the photo, your drive gear looks pretty unhealthy. Also make sure the balance ring on the gear is not loose... They can cause hundreds of dollars worth of damage if they get free.

John,

The excessive weld used in re-attaching the gear flange is likely doing your ring gear little good. Finding a better Bendix or Bendix gear may be the best solution.

Weld repairs can be done in this case but should be done from the back side of the flange so as not to mess up the gear itself.

John,
to save a lot of time and money you should invest in a complete drive gear assembly i had the same problem except on my 26 touring it broke the "drive sleeve and balance ring" part of "balance ring" got jam on fly-wheel ring gear
i had to remove the engine found out that also broke one tooth in the gear save yourself some troubles and replace complete assembly.

Thanks to everyone for the advice; just in time before I place my parts order. I hadn't really thought about the welded repair damaging the ring gear, which is indeed worn a little on the side facing the bendix. In theory I could turn the ring gear around to provide a good new surface. It's one of those things that's just been there so long you don't take notice of it.

John H,
NO! You can not turn around (flip over) the ring gear. The teeth are beveled to allow easy engagement and disengagement of the bendix gear. If you flip the ring gear to use the other side, the bendix can get stuck and not come out. Hope this helps. Bill

What you can do is turn the starter ring gear one turn clockwise or counterclockwise so that the bendix is engaging into "new teeth". Most people don't realize it, but the T engine usually stops in one of two positions every time and these spots are 180 degrees of crank shaft revolution apart. The two spots that are badly worn on your ring gear is where the bendix initially engages. By rotating the ring gear 1/4 turn and re-attaching, you present fresh teeth for the bendix to engage in. If the gear teeth are worn half way thru, you are better off installing a new ring gear.

Not to start any type of competitive urination, but I am curious if you are using a 6v battery or 12v. Just curious.

Hal,
6V...there is no way a 12V battery will ever get near this car. Most of the time I crank by hand to start anyway. I would assume the previous owner used the starter all the time as the choke rod to the front of the radiator was not there when I got the car.

Hey John:

Is that a sun roof or a moon roof you got on that car?

Hi John,

When I was an impetuous youth I Vee cut and braze welded the sleeve on my '25 TT Bendix. The repair worked well till it let go...broken magnets and a major hole in the crankcase cost me tens of dollars...back in 1965! Go with a new Bendix if you can!
