I am attempting to research and compile a history of these Auto Theft-Signal System wheel locks. I have to date identified 31 individual sizes by markings. Two areas that I am most in need of information is any history further matching the embossed or stamped size markings to a specific vehicle or wheel and information concerning the marketing network used to sell and distribute these devices. If I can complete this task I will provide the information to anyone interested or even submit an article to the "Vintage Ford" for consideration. Thanks. Dave.

Dave, It will be really interesting to see what number wheel lock matches what wheel size considering different brands of tires have different profiles. I have one of these locks for some 19" demountables but had to grind off part of the inner dimentions of the lock to get it to fit the tire though it is still very tight. If I had known previously that there were so many sizes I would have waited and traded with someone else that had one slightly larger. I look forward to your final list....Michael Pawelek

Dave, I have seen 6 or so of these locks in person and maybe 20 on Tbay over the years and none of them have had the "U" shaped clamp or chain to go around one of the spokes like in the 3 patent drawings I found on "Google Patents". I wonder if many folks lost these parts or if the ones I have seen are a earlier or later design?....Michael Pawelek

Mike. Do you know what marking was on it before you ground it down? Also, I (and a fellow Model T'er and wheel lock enthusiast) have identified by possession 31 sizes and are aware of and believe there are 3 more that existed for at least a total of 34 seperate sizes (maybe more??). If anyone has advertisements from old papers, magazines, parts supply books or whatever please look for this type of security device and advise either on the forum or email. Thanks to all. Dave.

Dave: Here's a 3 1/2 inch marked unit made by Green Lock Co., Detroit. It has STOP THIEF CAR LOCK in raised letters. You don't find many of these type with the spoke lock ring. Jay in Northern Ca.

Hi I have one of these, it's a Miller-Chapman and is stamped on the inside with "4FR". Any way to find out what this fits or what it's worth?

Thanks,

Hi All
I'm not sure if this will work as I intended, however if it does then clicking on each patent number should open the patent for viewing. If not you will just have a plain list of all of the related patents that I could find.
There are aprox 40 patents of wheel lock or warning devices. Hope they are of some use, and that a spreadsheet
of this size is not a no no.

Art

Can't preview it this way either.

I just inventoried a lock marked with an August 1914 patent in LA for a local museum. It did not have the spoke ring shown in the picture above. It did have a small strap with a chain that was attached to the key. The key and lock were also marked "Corbin". The inside markings on this one said "4 C". I hope this helps.

Hi,
my dad just got his hands on a lock that looks exactly like the one in the picture. It says Green Lock Co Detroit on one side. On the other it says Stop Thief Car Lock and it also say Pat Pend. He was wondering when it was made, what car it is made for and how much it is worth. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much! (this lock has put a big smile on my dad's face)

Gigi, your father's lock was made for any early car with spoked wheels & tires the lock could fit. Could be used for modern motorcycles, too. Most important for the value is a fitting key. Here are a few recent auction results for similar locks - with keys.

I have a Miller-Chapman security auto-theft signal system lock, patented Aug. 20, 1914. The ID plate has $100 Reward. B2 is inside the lock, it is in good conditon and I do not have the key. I am trying to find out what it might be worth and how to advertise it.

Thanks,

Fred
