Hi all , my Z head conversion and relap of valves is complete, BUT has anyone experienced the cold start /hard to fire it up, but once cranked and running, starts up first go.
I have set the valves at 12 thou after a good relapping in, good grey band all the way around, coils put out a big spark from the lead to the top of the plug and plug puts out a good strong spark when dangled over the side of the head, battery is 6 volts, bearings are all perfect, engine is spotless inside.
Any thoughts ??
Cheers Noel
I recently learned to apply FULL choke on the Winfield for at least one rev. Once it fires, I have to back off the choke to keep it running. After it fires once, it will start easy.
l am guessing you and l have if not the same problem, one very similar problem. thanks for your input
What a difference now that the engine and head have some time on them , starting now on 2nd short start, every time.
Cheers for your input.

I rarely get a "free start" with my Z head, but have gotten over 15 in a row with a stock head. My Z starts easily on the first or second pull. In cold weather, I choke it for 2 pulls after openning the carb 1/4 turn. I turn the key to battery and it usually starts on the first pull.
