Great picture, in Seattle, around 1909:

Is it the Simplex that took part in NY Times race 1908?

In all that's been written about the 1909 race, I don't think I've ever seen a pic of a Shawmut.

Here's a thread from last year with two pics of the Shawmut: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50893/62584.html?1218729999

From a different angle than the Shorpy pic, but they certainly look much the same, f. ex. the fabric/leather front fenders & the search light.

Unusual direction to have a double barrel shotgun pointing. Hope it wasn't loaded.

I think it is the Shawmut. Dan's pictures appear to show the Shawmut at the beginning of the race with the spare tires neatly packed away on the back and the fenders all straight. In the Seattle photo the Shawmuts fenders are trashed, the spare tires are all piled up on the rear of the car.

It isn't the same car the wheels are much smaller in the shorpy picture. Also where did the rear seat go?.

Looks like the Shawmut, like the Model T, lost a lot of parts along the way and was modified over the course of the brutal drive. Tops of the fenders, headlamps, rear seat gone. Cowl lamps replaced by a different brand.

The front wheels may have been changed on the Shawmut along the way, who knows. Compare the big carbide lamp mounted to the cowl in pictures of the Shawmut.

It's really a shame that the only facts many know about this race is the propaganda put out by Ford!! A much better accound with lots of pictures is the 1955 book Tin Lizzie by Stern! I cant seem to find it but i have a much better version in a National History magizine i bough by chanch. In mine if only my mind the best car was pulled out by the owner with no chanch of winning was the Itala? Pulled out by owner never mentions it was hit by a TRAIN!! Yes the model T was the [little car] aginst the larger cars but No Mention of the 800 pound Gorilla Sponser Ford aginst the big cars??? Still room for a little truth before, during, and after this years re enactment of the race tour! Bud.
