Hi,

I am in the process of rebuilding my 23's front end and I've run into a problem I hope you folks can help with. I noticed a bit of play at the tie rod ends and found there were no bushings present. I ordered a bushing kit from one of the parts houses that supposedly contains front spring shackle and tie rod end bushings. I found the shackle bushings, but I was also send "Spindle Arm Bushings". Are these the same as tie rod end bushings? How are they supposed to fit? The do not fit in the spindle eye, they are too big! Do the tie rod ends have bushings? Can someone show me a picture or a diagram of what the assembly is supposed to look like?

Thanks much!

The tie rods go through the spindle arms which have the bushings. Yours are probably worn out. They can be a bear to remove, and I just last week ,made a press tool so I could remove some.If you have a service manual, see Fig.371 on page 166. It shows arm with bushing in place.

The spindle arm bushings sold by the parts houses are a very poor fit. Too much slop. Best to make your own.

Jason -- You can use spring/shackle bushings for the tie rod end bolts (spindle bushings). The I.D and O.D are correct, unlike the bushings the vendors send with the tie rod bolts. Just cut their length to fit.

I just started reassembling the TT this week, and found that the tie rod bushings from Langs are OK. They fit the bolts just fine, with no slop. Today I checked the ones on my touring car, and found that I'll have to replace both bolts and bushings to get a less exciting ride.

Use bronze bushings. You can get them at any bearing supply place for about $2. Ream for a perfect fit.
