Hi Folks,

On my 1915 roadster, I have an interference problem with the recently installed rocky mountain brakes. The two new brake rods coming from the swinging equalizer plate interfere with the front rod that connects the running boards on either side of the car. This occurs if I try to run them above or below this rod. Anyone have this problem or know perhaps what I did wrong?

I noticed that the rear rod connecting the running boards has several bends, lowering in enough so that if I switched the front to the rear, the problem would go away. Is this a possible fix or does that rear rod have those bends for some type of clearance?

Thanks!
Chuck in Bolton, MA

Chuck,

Welcome aboard. I noticed a different posting of yours and when I checked your profile it mentioned you had two postings so far.

Short answer – yes you could switch the front and rear running board truss rods. The rear has the bend to allow a little more room for the chassis to flex and the torque tube/drive shaft tube not to hit the truss rod. You could also purchase and or make another rear one to use on the front. See John Regan’s excellent description of the original truss rods at his site at:

http://www.funprojects.com/products/4816.cfm scroll down and click on “Certificate of Authenticity” or further down click on any “PDF” they both take you to the same page. Also when you look at the first picture – that shows both the front and rear rods one on top of the other and not a single rod. The individual rods are shown just below that photo.

If you have a chance, please take a look on your car’s body and see if it has a body manufacturer’s number or letter on it. For details on where to look (also other items to look for) please see the posting at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/29/40322.html or use the search feature Icon above and search on “Home for Holidays” in subject of posting. If you do or do not find anything – please let me know.

Again, welcome aboard!

Respectfully submitted,

Bend the Rocky Mountain brake rods so that they don't hit the truss rods. No big deal just bend them both the same. There are a couple of equalizers that are used which may determine whether to run them above or below . I am pretty sure I ran mine below the running board brace rods. I'll post tomarrow if it is the other way.

Mine are bent to run OVER the running board braces.

Chuck,

I have RM brakes on my '15 touring. The brake rods are far below the running board supports. I wonder if your rear spring is sagging? I can't see how they could possibly be close to hitting.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the replies. Seems that I'm not the only one that has had this issue so I'm not concerned. I located another rear running board truss and replaced the front one with it. Problem solved.

As far as I can tell, the rear spring isn't sagging.

best,
Chuck
