I have craters ( Holes) worn in my valve tapets making it hard to check the clearance. I assume I need to file them flat after I lap the valves? Thanks for any help. Shane

If they're worn that badly, replace them and check your cam lift too. It's probably worn as well.

They are hardened steel and a file will not touch them. A grinder will work, but getting them flat is not so easy.
