SO IT WAS NUMBER 11 that was the first one sold. There was a story about that A perhaps 25 years ago. At that time it was reported that it was exported to Switzerland.

Sure looks like #4,and #5 sold before #11 judging by the list Kim posted.

Also #7 and #15 were sold at least 5 days prior to #11.

Kim,
We have an EFR member who lists his Model A as #29. I sent an email asking for info, but haven't received anything back yet.

I asked Kim Dobbins about the source of this information and he beleives it to be order entry or shipping data not actual "sales".
This may account for why Dr. Pfennig (car#11) gets credit for keeping the fledgling company afloat in 1903 with the first payment (sale) on page 239 of Ford, the Times, the Man the Company.

Rob, I have another hand written list that has #29 on it.That list has #29 as being sold on 10-10-1903 to B. O, Fair of Glenfield PA. There is a ledger page for B. O. Fair in my ledger but it does not give the number of the car. All it says is that a car was shipped to B. O. Fair in Glenfield, PA. on 10-12-1903. What is interesting is that the dollar amount for the car is 0.

Here is a copy of the ledger page for Dr. Phenning. As you can see he paid for the car in full on July 13, 1903 and the car was shipped on July 28 1903.

I looked a bit further into the ledger and see that deposits were recorded on July 13,1903 for the following cars:#9,11,19 and 30. These were the first cars that deposits were paid on. The first car shipped was recorded as #4 on July 20,1903 and 3 more cars #5,7,15 were shipped on July 23, 1903. So it appears that Dr Yates got the earliest car and got the earliest car shipped (July 20, 1903), but 4 other buyers actually paid there deposits earlier.

Here is a photo of the Yates car (#4). This is probably the lowest numbered Ford production car we have a photo of, unless the 2 cars shown on the Ford farm below are 2 out of the first 3.

Yates car - #4

Andrew-Thanks for sharing the photo of Serial #4 I remember seeing this photo years ago ,but had forgotten about it and had not made a copy.

Years ago I used to live in Toronto and passed the Canada Cycle & Motor Car Co. every day on my way to work,Its located on Lawrence Ave just east of Weston Rd. When I was growing up I think everyone owned a "CCM bicycle" CCM was a Canadian institution I think they also made hockey sticks.Anyway I'm wondering if we have anyone in the Toronto area who could contact the company and see if they just might have a photo of Model A Serial #6 I remember the company was very big on public relations and very proud of its corporate history.Serial #6 is not #4 ,but I think everyone would enjoy seeing another single digit serial number Model A.Its a long shot, but stranger things have happened.-Don

I may be wrong but at the 100 year party in Richmond IN. we went on a tour to a farm museum and they had a 1903 ford in one of the out buildings. I took some pictures of it, maybe I can post them later if I can find them.

John,

I took pictures of that car too. I think it was a model AC, late 1903 or maybe even 1904.

Found the Pictures but they are prints. I'm not sure how to post them unless I can scan them in but that will take a few days. I have several pictures in color and they look like the vintage Black and whites. One picture has a clear shot of the Placard that states it is a 1903 A model but I could not find the serial number on it just the short history of the car and who donated it. Man that was a great event I miss you guys...Ha. I know why they say a picture paints a thousand words.
