The motor is missing, at low and high revs.

I have done everything mechanical on my 22 rebuilt engine, even pulled the timing cover convinced that the camshaft gear was crook, it was perfect!

It is a non starter, non generator car with a working mag (22 Volts) and a trickle mag charger to the 6 volt battery. New Patterson coils, rebuilt switch.

So, at idle, (missing occasionally)I switched from magneto to battery and closed the battery isolation switch.

IT CONTINUED TO RUN!

What's wrong?

If you can get it to run with no fuel as well as no electrics, then you need to patent it quick! Sorry, couldn't resist that.

Got to be something wired wrong for it to run with no battery. Does it run on mag position with the battery isolated - if no, then you have the feed wires into the coilbox switched. If yes, then check that rebuilt switch, cos it's feeding mag output in both positions.

Have you tried disconnecting the trickle charger?

Try looking for points where current could be arcing - it's amazing what you can find by running it in the dark and just looking around for stray sparks.

I've had misfires from plug wires touching the head and timer wires catching on pan bolts.

If the battery isolation switch is between the starter switch and the battery, and the engine is running when you disconnect the battery, you are probably running on the generator. This will also fry the generator if you are using one. Don't do it. The cause of missing is elsewhere. Most likely spots spark plugs, timer, coils or coil box. Other possible spot might be the ignition switch.

You said non starter, non generator, so you must have a magneto connection to both sides of the ignition switch. Still most likely spots for trouble are spark plugs, timer, coils, or coil box.

Brendan,

What is

"a trickle mag charger to the 6 volt battery"?

Could that device be interrupting the ignition current? Will the engine run smoothly with that device disconnected?

Dave

Brendan
One of the magneto battery trickle chargers available on the market today modifies the output current waveform of the magneto in such a way that the coils will not work properly.
Contact me via email directly and I will fill you in on the details.
