just got back froim a 24 mile run went up some pretty steep hills and went right along but i sort of noticed some light hessitations or very slight misses if you will is that normal?
and when going up hill do i need to retard spark or hav it advanced all the way also how do i exactly know how to lean and rich the carb as i go along? i am used to only around the block !

Going up hill leave the spark where it is when you are on level. If the engine slows down, then retard to the next node, but not all the way up. When I say next node, I am talking about running on magneto. You will notice that as you advance the spark, you will pull it down a few notches and nothing happens, then when you pull it a bit more, it will speed up. Then pull it down a few notches and no change then pull a little farther and it will speed up etc. I call those points where it speeds up "nodes". The faster the engine goes, the farther advanced the spark should be. It is dependant on the speed of the engine, not the car, so going up hill in low the spark would be more advanced than going uphill in high.
If you are running on battery, or distributor, you will just have to guess how much to retard for uphill. If you notice a knocking, or the engine is running heavy, retard just a few notches until it smooths out.

I lean out the carb as the engine begins to warm up. Put a paint mark on the mixture know so I could easily see where it's set. Through experimentation I've found the leanest setting I can use without the engine starting to stumble or feel sluggish. To start the engine I need to richen it 1/3 to 1/2 turn.

Hey congrats! I, too, drove my T for the first time outside of the neighborhood. What a rush! I only went about 7 miles, but extremely hilly roads. It was a nice test for me as there were plenty of stop signs, merging with traffic, dodging of pedestrians and all kinds of stuff. I only killed it once, starting off from a stop in low and forgot to give it the throttle. Also, it was the first test of my new radiator, which seems to have worked just great.
