Having an issue with an oil/grease leak showing up in the rear hub and brake drum of 1926 Touring. After trying to get the rear tire off for 2 days(finally released from axle using the backing off of the Axle Nut method) I found that the inner spring and leather seal were quite tight fitting. The outer felt and cap were snug fitting.

There is some oil/grease in the Rear End Housing Tube(only one side). Is this normal or is the problem the seal on the inner side of the housing?

I understand the rear-end heavy oil should be about 1 inch below the fill hole.

Would an oil leak/grease leak at the front of the drive shaft result in oil travelling the length of the drive shaft, thru the housing to the rear-end hub. I don't notice an increase in the oil level in the rear end.

Am I adding too much grease in the outer rear bearing. I don't add a lot there. Maybe a cap(grease cap) full every month or month and a half

Andy, Are you leaking oil or grease out the outer felt seal? If it is oil it is coming from the differential and your leather seals are leaking. If it is grease you are over filling your rear bearings and the resulting pressure is forcing the grease out. If the leather seals are working you have a sealed bearing and should not have to add any grease. If oil is leaking past the leather seals it will dilute your grease and run out the outer felt seal. We now have the neoprene inner seals back in stock. They usually work better than the leather for an inner seal.
