Having just bought my first Model T ( a 1917 Touring car ) I have been buying some original tools on Ebay. Will I need an Atlas Rim tool to remove the demountable rims from the wooden wheels? I have seen several for sale on Ebay lately.

Those are for 21 inch split rims I believe. If you have 30x3 1/2 's you shouldn't need one.

2-3 tire irons and a select few vocabulary words are all you need. Send me an email for list of words. (G)

Rick
Believe Jack's right, if it has 3 legs with a crank, it's for the split rims. What you should look for is a bead breaker, a clamp with 2 long arms & tire irons.

You should also have a friend to walk around the tire, find someone short so they'll fit in the turtle <grn>.

How in the heck does that thing work? (The Atlas Rim tool)... if you have 21 inch demountable rims, should you have one?

Al,

If you have the Split rims, these were on the wood artillery wheels, which were an option, not the wires, the rim spreader is a neccesity. It opens the rim so it can be unlocked & collpased, then it's reversed so it can be locked. They're pretty common & usually in the range of 30 bucks. Here's an old thread on how to use them, with an alternative method.

I think this method looks good and is straight forward... So, is this what a model T jack looks like? I need to find one...

Thanks for providing the link!

Just make sure if you are using a bottle jack that it is short enough to fit under the axle when the tire is flat! I've heard of people getting a flat, pulling out their jack only to find that it only fits under the axle if the tire is fully inflated!

Al, they are pretty common. I've seen them at swap meets, yard sales, antique stores, flea markets, etc. Just keep your eyes open. Dave
