I have 400/450-21 tires on my '26 Tudor. Can I put 450/475-21 tires on the same rims?
yup yup yup !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yup! 26-27 demountable. Universal 450/475-21
Can someone explain the meaning of what the numbers 440/450-21 are, and why 450/475-21 tires will fit the same rim as 440/450-21.
The numbers 440/450 are the width of the tire actually in inches 4.40inches or 4.50 inches and the 21 is the diameter of the tire at the rim. You are only looking at a fraction of an inch difference in the width between the two sizes.
However the older tires 30"x3 1/2" are measured differently. The 30" is the diameter at the tread and the 3 1/2" is the width of the tire so this tire is measured by subtracting twice the width from the diameter which equals 23 inches and the 30"x3" tire is 24 inches at the rim. So those sizes are not interchangeable.
Now that I have confused you, Yes either size you posted will fit your rim.
Thank you, gentlemen! Good to know. I like the idea of a bit more tread on the ground and seems that they are a bit cheaper, too!
As for price, the bit more paid for the Made-in-USA Lester black wall 440/450 x 21 ($136) is worth it to me. These are made of polyester and last longer and ride better than nylon of the lower cost 450/475.
About to order a set, the ones on the '27 were mounted in 2003, guessing about 20,000 miles total and just now the rears are showing plenty of wear down, can see all of Lincoln's head on the penny!
Right rear tire
Compare to the spare mounted in 2003, never been on the ground. These tires come with a straight wiggle tread, but IMO the polyester rides good and gives great wear.
