Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2018: Door hinge pins?

I've had a passenger door from the '26 TT to a body shop to fabricate a new door bottom. This is the enclosed steel body. Then, made the mistake of leaving the hinge pins with the door. The hinge pins are now MIA... From what I have found, catalogs list new pins (inexpensive per pair) for '24 to '27 "open" cars. I'll need three, but anyone know if those hinge pins are universal? Suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Langs shows the diameter of the 27- 27 pins to be 7/32. Check your door hinges to see if they are the same diameter holes. Maybe the same? Langs no. Is 5205bx.

Out of the 16 '26-27 hinge sets I had, all of them are & have been 1/4, not .218 (7/32) Snyders is the only place I found that sells them.

You have to buy the oversize (.247-.250) '28-'31 closed car hinge steel pins. 6 for $1.75 PN A-46335-OS

Or, the Model A pickup (same hinge as a 26-27 closed car) but a stainless pin. which is .247x 1.830 which is the size of the pin I am holding, out of my '27 coupe hinges. $2.70 each. PN A-46335-SS

I do not know what the hinges for a TT are like though! So my info might be useless to you.

I believe Randall Anderson sells them.

Just did a measurement of the '26 TT door hinge pins. The shank is 1/4" round by 2" long (not counting the crown). The coupe pins seem to only be about 1 3/4" long.

Larry, if you have contact information for Randall Anderson, please advise. I didn't notice a listing among the MTFCA suppliers. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

-Thanks, Guys-
The further question would be the temper or 'hardness'. If made of a lower-grade softer steel, is it OK, or should the pins be hardened? 'Jim' at Lang's had suggested McMaster-Carr, along with "Big Flats Rivet Co.". I'm not familiar with either one. But sure am pleased to learn there's a reasonable answer. Thanks!

Marv

I got several pins that should work, 2 1/2" long, you can hack saw to length. The head dia. is approx. 0.590" Hinge pins are soft steel, can't think of any T hinge pins that are hardened.

Can have them free, will mail in envelope.

Marv,

I'm pretty sure the originals were not hardened.

McMaster Carr: 330-995-5500. An original supplier to Ford Motor Company during the Model T era. Known then as McMaster Carr Nut & Bolt Company.

It sounds like Dan T. might be able to rescue me! (PM has been sent.)
Thanks for all the input, too. At least there are contact sources to refer to, as well.

Hinge pins have a knurl under the head to keep them from rotating, and working their way out.

The pins I purchased from Lang's look exactly like the MMC domed head rivet, no knurling. The originals on the '26 coupe were slightly peened to keep them from working out

For 'Whatever it's worth', the TT does not have any knurling/serration on the driver side pins. They are a straight-shank 1/4" X 2" to the bottom of the crown. Appreciate all the help and suggestions!

Took this close up of a TT on display a few years ago, just noticed I somehow got the external hinge and pin details!
