Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2018: Crown wheels

Yesterday I visited an old parts warehouse in the city and the proprietor had unearthed a cache of used crown wheels, among them 8 or so T model items. I learned something from them.

These two are both Ford script items. Notice that the gear teeth on one are some 3/16" shorter than thr other. The internal fiameter and the mounting bolt circle match, but the gear with the shorter teeth has a lesser outer diameter. I have never seen this before, and suspected one had been modified for some reason, until I found second smaller gear.

I have never seen a gear like this one either.

The part number is stamped in the forging. This may explain the variation.

This English gear is in good order. It has the usual width teeth.

Very, interesting. Must have something to do with where they were manufactured, and by whom. I have seen a few odd differences in after-market gears not made by or especially for Ford. But something like that with a Ford script? Fascinating.
If you find the answers? You will HAVE to let us know!

Wayne, I'm waiting for answers. None of the gears is recessed at the back like Ruckstel items. All are 40 tooth. I can't think of a logical reason for the difference
