Im working on a Model TT fire truck. 1924 or so that has soiled rubber rear wheels. Im trying to find out if I can put normal tires on the rims or do I have to find new rims that will fit? I will try and post pictures if I can figure that out.
May have to change the wheels if you want to run Pneumatics, but it likely ran solids because of the weight of those tanks... the old clincher tires did not have the load bearing capacity of modern tires, ergo the solid tires.
Are the originals shot or rotten or ?? I'm not sure who reskins solid tire rims, but it might be worth going that direction... if you can find someone who does it.
You will need new rims made for balloon tires and tubes.
They can be redone. I don't think it's cheap, but it can be done.
Just looked it up... Canton Bandag still has the molds and facilities to do solid rubber tires. Looks pretty good to me...
YMMV of course.
Special tools are needed to install new solid rubber tires. There are good youtube video's that show how it is done. Very interesting. New solid rubber tires are put on horse carriages all the time.
Salina Forklift in Salina Kansas has in the past been able to retried solid wheels. Google them, that is who McPherson College has used in the past.
Whether you need new wheels depends on what kind you have. If the current wheels are demountables, you can keep the wheels and get new rubber on the rims, or get rims that take pneumatic tires. If they're non-demountable, your choices are to get new rubber on them or switch to wheels that take pneumatic tires.
Your fire truck looks like it was an Obenchain-Boyer from Logansport Indiana. I have restored two of them. I also reproduced the correct rear fenders and made a few extra. I have two of them left and no plans to make any more... Let me know if you are interested.
Your hard rubber tires can be re-treaded. Probably for far less than all the parts you will need for the pneumatic setup.
Thanks for all the replys.
the wheels are demountable so I'm holding out hope for rims I can put pneumatic on. cant get size right now as I'm out of town but I think they where as 33X something.
Adam Doleshal I am interested in the fenders.
