Just about have the rear axle put back together.

When I took it apart the bolts for the radius rod near the U-Joint had castle nuts. Both were very loose. As I am putting it all back together those nuts do not seam to have enough room to be threaded on.

What is the correct nut?

Is there any tips to installing them?

Thanks

Me, I would use lock washers and regular nuts.

Your 26-27 rods are not drilled for cotter pins. Add lock washers. You can use standard SAE nuts.

If the radius rods are not drilled for a cotter pin, then the answer should be obvious!

Bigger issue, there just does not seam to be any room to thread on a nut.

The lock washers take up space under the nut.

Loosen the bolts holding the radius rods to the backing plate. then you can tip the rods enough to install the nuts.

There is no need to drill any holes, a nut goes on first then the assembly is put through the hole and a nut is turned on the out side and the radius rod is sandwiched between the nuts Not a good picture but I think you can see it. I have an earlier 15 model and the casting is different.

Maybe your rods are from a different year?

The 26 - 27 is different David. It has a shoulder and doesnt use the rear nut.

Got them in, it did require a pry bar to get enough room to spin the new nuts.

Here is a photo from my 24 rebuild. It didn't have the shoulders so it took a bit of adjusting to square the rear end. If you can't the nuts on you might have to take the drive shaft loose. I forgot to put the radius rods on when I assembled mine and had to take the shaft off. 2 steps forward 1 step back.

Those are 26/27 radius rods and do not take two nuts. Install as shown then add a lock washer and then a regular nut on each side.

Mark, do you know when the rear radius rods went from two nuts to a nut and a shoulder? I ask because I'm always interested in zeroing in on when my '26 was built and it has two nuts and lock washers on the radius rods.

The Encyclopedia just says the change was made "during 1926", so no help there. :-(
