Went to start disassembling my 26 trans and I go to look at the clutch spring and something just didn’t look right. There is a gear on the clutch spring support. So I checked the the trans book and searched the forum and looked through tons of pictures and nothing. My guess is it’s for a speedometer but not sure. Second is any advise on removal because compressing the spring just makes this gear get in the way of the pin. Is there any harm in removing the drive plate with the clutch spring still on? I would figure I would need to slowly back off the bolts to release tension on the clutch fingers. Just wanted to check before making a mistake.
Patterson speedometer gear.
Might not be a Patterson - I believe they came in 2 pieces and clamped together ?
Not Paterson. They were two piece, spiral drive bronze gears. There were other brands.
Allan from down under.
This appears to be a Nash speedometer drive gear. The Patterson could be installed without removing the back of the transmission by using the two piece style. The Nash drives I have seen are one piece and need the spring off to be installed.

yes you can back off the mounting bolts a little at a time. Do it all the time. That's why you see many drive plates with the spring still attached. Same as removing the clutch pressure plate on any other car.
Yes, as Harry stated, it’s the Nash brand. I still have a couple of new fiber mates to it along with the special speedo cable. IMHO it’s the best drive out there, but the trans gear is harder to install.
Thank you very much everybody. I love this forum and all the knowledge here.
Tim,
I have the Nash set up on my Coupe but I am missing the cable inside. Do you have any idea or suggestions on where to obtain the interior cable? I have the housing and ends but the cable was broken.
