So I need to remove the hood on my 27 TT so I can pull the radiator. One person said it just pulls off, but mine seems to have nuts holding it on.
5/16" wrench fits but doesn't fit. Not a lot of room to fit a spanner on it.
Suggestions?
Foam is penetrating oil
Someone has added a retainer at the radiator. You could loosen the rods and hoses and tip the radiator forward or take the retainer off like your doing. Normally there would be a U shaped piece there that is open to the top so you could just lift the hood off.
Grant,
No question is dumb when you can learn from it. The clips that hold hood rod on a Model T should have one side enclosed like you show and the other side open on top so you can just set the hood rod down in to it. I am assuming that someone has installed two enclosed hood rod clips instead of one open and one closed making your project difficult. I will try to find a photo of the clips.
Mark is faster then I am!
Hood retainer pictures:
Not only is the wrong retainer in the car, but the nuts are Metric! 8mm
You could also loosen the lock nut on the radiator support rod and then turn it out of the radiator so that the radiator tips forward. This would allow the hood rod to come out of the retainers on the ends and lift off.
My '26 had the rear retainers front and back when I bought it so I had the same problem that Grant has. I replaced the front with proper retainers and rivets. My rivets were easy to remove. I could have unbolted the radiator shell and lifted it off the radiator.
What Grant says, When working on my car, dad used what ever came out of his saved nuts jar, many were Metric. I replaced all that I run across. Originally these little retainers were riveted .
Just for what it's worth....If at all possible, Use a 6 point wrench it covers more hex area and does not slip.
