I helped tear down a local state bank that had been rebuilt in 1910. In the 2nd story which was sealed off in the 1950's was boxes of bank deposit slips from the 1920's. The deposits were for amounts from 25 cents up to $5. The new bank was next door and I took a few and gave them to the lady's at the bank for their history display. Also was dealer paperwork for and order forms for farm equipment from 1925 to 1927. Pricing for tractors and all attatchments. I kept a set and gave the rest to friends that would appreciate them.

Does anyone know how these thing work?

I thought it might be a wind-up spring, but they say it requires only one or two "half-turns" of the crank. Perhaps it's a simple ratchet mechanism that makes cranking safer, but not much easier.

The Katch-a-Kick just stops the handle making more than a full turn. I suspect that if the engine REALLY kicked back it would damage the limit stop.
I was wondering if any had a more sophisticated arrangement that actually stopped the handle from turning counter-clockwise at all.

do not prevent the engine from rotating backwards. There is no danger of damaging any part of the engine or crankshaft. The device simply pushes the crank away from the engine when the engine starts to turn backwards. The crank handle does move backwards a little bit when a kick back occurs, just until it disengages the crank from the pin on the crankshaft. This small backward movement is much less then if the devise was not installed.

Look very closely at the mechanics of both the Non-Kick and the Bear Manufacturing device and you will see that they simply disengages the crank handle with a little bit of backward rotation by pushing the crank handle away from the engine. They do not stop the engine from rotating backwards.

Think about, if is a simple ratchet on the crank handle to prevent the engine and crank handle from rotating backwards would have worked, it would would be easier to build the theses devices. A simple ratchet would have likely broken the crank handle shaft or sheared the pin when the engine kicked back."

I looked back into some earlier threads and most have some secondary ratchet that moves the handle away from the motor when the engine runs backwards.
I was looking for something more sophisticated, probably with ball bearings and multi-angled rotors. I want the device to turn even less than the 1/6 of a turn, hardly turn backwards at all.
I bet if I offered a $1,000,000 for a device, I would be swamped with ideas.
