My 1914 has a new quirk that happened the last 3 times I started.

Immediately after cold starting, it runs rough. If I turn the carb adjustment clockwise about a quarter of a turn it smooths out. I let it idle a little, but it still wants the mixture leaned out. If I drive about a quarter to a half mile, all of a sudden it starts running rough until I open the mixture back up a quarter turn, then it smooths right out and runs fine for the rest of the day.

I pulled the plugs and they all looked fine, but I cleaned them anyway. Any thoughts?

Remove carb and clean trash out of float valve

Push car out of garage.
Put out the cigarette.
Put bucket under carburetor.
Close off gas supply at tank.
Open drain valve or fitting at bottom of carburetor.
Let carburetor drain out noting if any crap comes out.
Put fitting back or close drain valve at bottom of carburetor.
Open gas supply at tank.
Drive car to see if it has improved.
If not, do as Scott says.

Joe, when you make the adjustments each time, is the adjusting screw/rod in the same position? Over time things wear. It may be that the clamping nut around the needle screw needs to be firmed up a bit to hold the adjustment you make. Otherwise, proceed as advised.

The adjusting needle always goes between the same 2 positions. 1/4 turn lean after the first start of the day, then back 1/4 turn all of a sudden after running just a short distance.

I am pretty sure it is the float as suggested previously. If I tap the cab body with a wrench immediately after starting it clears up and does not need any mixture adjustment.

I found the problem. The choke was sticking half open. The hot air tube was in the carb a little too deep and it caught the choke blade just enough to hold it half closed. Once I hit a bump, it would spring all the way open.
