I had this replaced with a Scat. I don't see a crack on it anywhere so since it seems perfectly OK, I'm going to keep it with the car and store it as a lamp.
Is there a common weak spot where these things usually break?
Yes, the filament in the bulb is where it will break.
The stress is greatest at the attachment to the wooden base. Turning it vertical would reduce it greatly, as it would not have to support the crank cantilevered horizontally like that.
If you leave the crank supported like that, over time the crank will eventually bend. Probably only a few thousandths, but it will bend.
Yes, of course! It's all clear to me now. So putting one of these back in an engine someday is probably not a good idea?
A lamp it is.
Easier on the eyes
That's a cool lamp Jesse!
Sometimes I cannot believe the lugging I've done and will do some more on one of those cranks.
Thanks Duey. Yeah, I gave it a big footprint because if it should ever tip over on me, there would be carnage. I don't want to deal with carnage.
I wasn't paying much attention to your first photo. I thought it was affixed to a wall. Sitting as you have it vertically on the floor shouldn't bother it.
Don't try the halogen bulb with it unless you upgrade the wiring.
I would have bet my next Social Security check that I had the photos in the upright position when I uploaded but apparently not. The good news is that the crank itself is depicted in the proper perspective.
Thanks Steve. I replaced the heat lamp with an LED bulb.
I believe photos that show up sideways on the forum usually come from phone cameras.
